The Ylang-Ylang grown in Anao, Tarlac is known to have the best scent among Ylang-Ylang trees in the Philippines.

The province of Tarlac is being positioned by the government and the South Korean government as a top producer of export-grade Ylang Ylang oil.

The Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (Philmech), the farm mechanization arm of the agriculture department, and the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) recently signed an agreement for the deployment of 10 Ylang Ylang oil extractor machines to select Ylang Ylang oil producing cooperatives in Tarlac. The Korean agency is expected to provide P20 million ($447,928.32*) for the project.

Philmech executive director Rex L. Bingabing and KOICA deputy resident representative Heesoo Hong signed the agreement.

In 2013, Philmech pilot-tested the oil extractor machine in Tarlac and made adjustments to make it more suitable to local conditions.

Korean experts designed the machine, in collaboration with the Korean Inventions Promotion Association (KIPA), which is under the South Korean government’s Korean Intellectual Property Office.

The machine can process 10 kilograms of Ylang-Ylang flowers in 6-8 hours, producing 10 milliliters of oil.

Export grade Ylang-Ylang oil is said to cost P45,000 ($1,007.84) per liter. The Ylang-Ylang grown in Anao, Tarlac is known to have the best scent among Ylang-Ylang trees in the Philippines and essential oil produced from these local flowers can be exported as raw material for perfume.

The use of machines is expected to make the extraction of Ylang-Ylang oil more efficient for export.
